After moving to Germany I have not been cooking that much. Karelian hot pot or known as Karjalanpaisti in Finland, is one of the national dishes in Finland. Originated from Karelia region, this stew is usually prepare with at least two different type of meats.

The ingredients needed to make Karelian hot pot:
  1. Get pork
  2. Make ready chuck, beef
  3. Get lamb
  4. Make ready salt
  5. Prepare allspice berries
  6. Get medium onions
  7. Get ground black pepper

There is no need to remove small bones. Put the meat and coarsely chopped Onion in layers in a casserole, seasoning each layer with salt and allspice. Add enough water to almost cover the meat. Instructions to make Karelian hot pot:
  1. Preheat oven 350 degrees Fahrenheit
  2. Chop the onions, cut the meat into bite sized pieces, crush the allspice berries.
  3. Layer the lamb in the bottom of pot add half a teaspoon salt and pepper. Add a third of the allspice. Now add half the onion covering the lamb
  4. Now add pork on top of the onion. On the pork add half teaspoon salt, pepper to taste, and a third of the allspice. add rest of onions on top.
  5. Last layer add add beef, season with 1/3 of the allspice half teaspoon of salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Pour your lamb broth just covering the top.
  7. Braise in the oven 2-1/2 to 3 hours.

Remove the cover and paper, stir and serve over hot, cooked buttered or mashed potatoes. Considered by many to be the national dish of Finland, Karelian Hot Pot proves that frugality is indeed a virtue—after slow and steady simmering. Karelian Hot Pot is a traditional meat stew originating from the region of Karelia.
